Most people think poker is a young man’s game.
And to be honest, in some ways… they’re right.
But what they don’t understand is this:
As you get older, you don’t have to play more to win—you just have to play smarter.
Poker Feels Different After 50
One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed is simple:
I get tired faster.
Back in the day, playing 6–8 hour sessions wasn’t a big deal. You could sit there all night, stay sharp, and keep making good decisions.
That’s not the case anymore.
Now, after a few hours, I can feel it:
- Focus starts slipping
- Decisions take longer
- Mistakes become more likely
And in poker, one bad decision can wipe out hours of good play.
So instead of fighting it, I adjusted.
I Play Less… But Better
Living and playing in Texas, one thing is clear:
Games are aggressive. Really aggressive.
A lot of players:
- Play too many hands
- Try to bully pots
- Bluff way more than they should
So I made a shift in my game:
👉 I play fewer hands
👉 But I play stronger hands
Instead of trying to keep up with the chaos, I let it work in my favor.
When you tighten up in aggressive games:
- You avoid marginal spots
- You stay out of trouble
- You get paid when you actually have it
The Biggest Mistake I See (Especially in Texas)
This is the pattern I see over and over again:
Players are trying too hard to be aggressive.
They:
- Bluff too often
- Overplay weak hands
- Try to “run the table” instead of playing solid poker
And it works sometimes… until it doesn’t.
Because when someone is always pushing, eventually they run into someone who’s actually holding a real hand.
That’s where patience wins.
My Goal Isn’t to Crush—It’s to Be Consistent
At this stage, I’m not trying to:
- Play marathon sessions
- Out-bluff everyone at the table
- Turn poker into a grind
My goal is simple:
Enjoy the game and be a net positive player.
That means:
- Making good decisions
- Managing my time and energy
- Walking away when I’m not at my best
The Real Edge After 50
Here’s the truth:
You don’t need to outplay everyone.
You just need to:
- Stay disciplined
- Pick better spots
- Let other players make the mistakes
Because they will.
Final Thoughts
Poker after 50 isn’t about keeping up with younger players.
It’s about understanding yourself:
- Your limits
- Your strengths
- Your mindset
For me, that means:
- Shorter sessions
- Better hands
- Less ego
And honestly?
That’s been one of the biggest improvements to my game.
